OYSF hosted the Sea Scouts’ annual Kelly Cup Regatta for the Cascade Pacific Council at Willamette Sailing Club, August 18-19, 2018. The sun was shining and winds were moderate but steady for Saturday’s clinic and Sunday’s regatta. Youth and leaders from the Sea Scouts’ Cascade Pacific Council don’t get to spend much time practicing sailing in Club 420 dinghies, so everyone walked away a better sailor. Thanks to Eddie Herzig and Conrad Miller from WSC for helping with coaching and running races.
The Kelly Cup Regatta is named in honor of Commodore John Kelly, who directed the renovation of the Yankee Clipper, and has been in scouting for over 80 years. The regatta is open annually to Oregon and Washington Scouts. Every other year, winners qualify for the Koch Cup at the Sea Star Base in Galveston, TX. Last year, it was the team from Everett, WA that qualified. OYSF looks forward to working with the Scouts again in 2019 and seeing who gets to go to Texas…
